A correspondent wrote with these inquiries: “I am curious about your stance on nutrients in irrigation water. For example let’s say the irrigation source has 60.6 PPM or 13.76 lb/A/in Calcium.

That’s the title of my seminar today at the Alberta Property Manager’s Conference. Minimalist is not a word I would often use, but when I looked at the conference program, that was the title I saw.

Those are the results Jason Haines described in his post about the evolution of precision fertilizer application. He explains how he makes use of observations, measurements, and predictions to find site specific nutrient requirements.

This question came in the mail: As to the MLSN guidelines that you have been a big proponent of, how do they apply to growing in a new course. I have wondered if they are more geared toward once a turfgrass becomes established and you are in maintenance mode.

There are lots of articles and blog posts at this time of year about fall fertilization and dormant fertilizer applications and keeping turf supplied with plenty of potassium too. I don’t think there is anything magic about fertilizer applications at this time of year.

I don’t often write about this, because I assume everyone knows it. But I’ve read a few things recently about amazing sums of money being saved by changing the way of fertilizing, all while getting the same or better turf conditions.

When I received the question about tissue testing, I replied that I would write a more detailed explanation later on the blog. I’ve tried to do this here without resorting to numbers or charts.
